480. Hail Mary prayer

YOUCAT Catechism + Catechism of the Catholic Church Lesson 480
Ave Maria series
480  What are the words of the “Hail Mary”?
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.  Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.  Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.

The Annunciation (painting by Bartolomé Esteban Perez Murillo).

The words of the Hail Mary in Latin are:  “Ave Maria, gratia plena.  Dominus tecum.  Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et beneductus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.  Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.  Amen.”
“Ave Maria” in Latin translates as “Hail Mary”.  The first part of the prayer is taken from the Bible.  The second part, “…now and at the hour of our death”, is an addition from the sixteenth century.
