What are the Ten Commandments?
1—I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange gods before me.
2—You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
3—Remember to keep holy the Lord’s day (Sabbath).
4—Honor your father and your mother.
5—You shall not kill.
6—You shall not commit adultery.
8—You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
9—You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
10—You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

Love Fulfills the Law. Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not covet,” and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this saying, [namely] “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.– Romans 13:8-10
The Ten Commandments as printed above are not found precisely in that form in Sacred Scripture; the text is based on two biblical sources: Exodus 20:2-17and Deuteronomy 5:6-21. Centuries ago the two sources were summarized for instructional purposes, and the Ten Commandments were presented to the faithful in the present form of the catechetical tradition.
